The Best Places to Retire in Arizona

The Best Places to Retire in Arizona

With its warm weather, favorable tax laws, and beautiful desert scenery, Arizona has long been an attractive retirement destination.  For some, spending winters in the state and living elsewhere the remainder of the year is an appealing option.  For others, year-round Arizona retirement living is the best choice.  Whatever you are looking for, Arizona is an excellent place to live when you are ready to retire.

According to a recent Kiplinger’s article, 17% of Arizona’s population are 65 or older.  With so many retirement-aged citizens, it is hardly surprising that the state has several great communities for this group.  Here are a few of many great places to consider for your Arizona home when you retire.

Sun City and Sun City West

For almost 50 years, the name Sun City has been synonymous with superior retirement living.  Located northwest of Phoenix, Sun City, and its sister community Sun City West, offer residents age 55 and up lower tax rates and planned community living.  These self-contained towns are geared towards seniors and offer spacious homes, golfing and other recreational activities, social gatherings and clubs, shopping, and places of worship as well as other amenities.

Green Valley

Green Valley, Arizona has a significant percentage of older residents, a lower tax rate, recreational activities, and access to the cultural and entertainment offerings of nearby Tucson.  If you are in the market for excellent golf courses and a mild four-season climate in the Santa Cruz River Valley, Green Valley, may be the right choice for your retirement.

Prescott

In northern Arizona, Prescott has more temperate weather, mountains, lakes, and forest scenery.  This small community offers many of the same amenities as a larger city but with less crowding.  Prescott also has several historic properties as well as planned retirement communities.

Scottsdale

Scottsdale, Arizona is a popular retirement locale which offers several high-end living options.  Although this area may be more expensive than others, it has some of the best golfing in the state, luxury accommodations,  several social clubs, and other attractive features.

Litchfield Park

Litchfield Park is another area which may appeal to retirees looking to buy near Phoenix.  This community has a multitude of medical centers, a lower tax rate, and several retirement living choices. Its proximity to nearby Phoenix allows residents to enjoy the city’s entertainment.  Additionally, Litchfield Park has its own cultural events such as the Annual Wigwam Festival of Fine Art, the Arts in the Park Outdoor Concert Series, and the Spring Art and Wine Festival.
